Health Requirements

Once accepted, students must submit evidence of a recent (6 months) Physical Examination completed by their Primary Health Care Provider or (for a fee) by the Occupational Medicine Department at St. John's Riverside Hospital.

Correction of any health problem that would interfere with the practice of nursing prior to enrollment into the school.

A physical examination with laboratory reports from screening tests and immunizations as required by NYPH Law #2165 must be completed prior to entrance into school.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES

The applicant must meet the following physical requirements:
  • Motor coordination must be sufficient to accomplish dexterous and precise clinical activities i.e., the eye hand coordination necessary for all types of medication administration.
  • Finger dexterity must be such that small objects can be easily manipulated i.e., instruments, needles, and tubes.
  • Manual dexterity must be sufficient to incorporate all of the above skills as well as those involved with patient care, i.e., calibration, suctioning, positioning and palpation.
  • Visual acuity adequate to read and interpret charts, graphs and color changes.  Auditory acuity adequate to assess pulse, heart, chest, bowel sounds and blood pressure.
  • Ambulation on the clinical unit is essential.
  • Ability to lift fifty (50) pounds.
APPLICANT WITH A DISABILITY

If an applicant has a physical or mental disability, the applicant should discuss this at the time of interview. The applicant will be advised to contact the Cochran School of Nursing Disability Officer and follow the Disability procedure.

NO STUDENT WILL BE ALLOWED TO ATTEND CLASS WITHOUT COMPLETE HEALTH CLEARANCE. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS
