ABOUT THE MEDICAL LIBRARY

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Medical Library is to provide knowledge-based information systems, resources, and services to support the needs of all members of the Hospital in the care of patients. The library also strives to serve the curriculum of the Cochran School of Nursing; managerial decision making; performance improvement activities; individual and institutional research; as well as patient and family education. The Library will provide the highest quality, maximum service to all its users.

LIBRARY INFORMATION SERVICES

The Library, located on the 4th floor of the Cochran School of Nursing in the Andrus Pavilion at St. John’s Riverside Hospital, serves as a major point of reference for all student course materials and research work.   Resources in the areas of nursing, medicine, allied health and general education are made available, as well as a wide range of topics such as nursing skills, nursing trends and research, medical research, and current events as they relate to the health care environment. Library staff is available to assist with research, library information resources training, circulation of library material, and the use of a variety of audiovisual and computer programs.

LIBRARY REGISTRATION

In order for the library staff to identify its patrons and track materials that are circulated from the library collection, we ask all patrons to complete a Library Membership Application.  Application forms for Cochran students and Faculty are available at the Medical Library or online via the Cochran School of Nursing website at http://www.cochranschoolofnursing.us.

BORROWING PRIVILEGES

Library books and CD-ROMs may be loaned out for 2 weeks (14 days) with one renewal for an additional 2 weeks.  If a reserve has been placed for material that is currently checked out, no renewals will be permitted for the material in question and must be returned on the designated due dateA fine of 25 cents perday will be charged for any library material that is overdue. We ask that all patrons make every attempt to return library material in a timely manner as it deprives others of their use.  Renewals are allowed in person or by telephone on the due date. Reference books, *videos, and journals, cannot be checked out of the library. 

*Videos and DVDs may be checked out to CSN Faculty, and Hospital Staff.

RESERVES

Reserves or holds may be placed for patrons on items that are currently checked out.  Requestors will be placed on a reserve list on a first-come-first-serve basis.  When the items that have been placed on reserve are returned to the library, the requesting patron will be contacted for immediate checkout.  Reserved items will remain at the Reference Desk for one (1) week during which time requestors must pick up their materials.  If reserves are not retrieved by the requestors, they will go to the next patron on the reserve list.

REFERENCE

The library has weekday, evening, and weekend staff to assist patrons with research, literature searches, circulation, and all informational inquiries.

AUDIOVISUAL COLLECTION

The library maintains a collection of over 360 videocassettes; 92 DVDs; and over 100 CD-ROM software programs on a variety of topics.  An audiovisual room is equipped with four television monitors with DVD/VCR players for students to view A/V material when not in use by instructors.  Arrangements can also be made for small group viewing for study purposes.

BOOKS & JOURNALS

The Library holds a collection of over 2000 books in medicine, nursing, allied health, and education; 113 journal titles in print with a five year span; and course required textbooks.  Students have borrowing privileges for certain circulating collections.  Reference collections are kept on reserve and are for in-library use only.

ELECTRONIC DATABASES

Electronic bibliographic databases are available to perform literature searches for research and course assignments.   The online collection includes the following: 1) OVID which gives access to Journals@OVID Full Text and MEDLINE; 2) ESBCOhost Research Database Biomedical Reference Collection, such as: Alt-Health Watch (Alternative and Complementary Medicine); CINAHL Plus with Full Text (Nursing and Allied Health); MEDLINE; Health Business Full text Elite (Healthcare Administration); Health Source: Consumer Edition (Patient and Family Information); Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection; SocINDEX (Social Work Index and Full Text Journals); SPORTDiscus with Full Text (Rehabilitation Index and Full Text Journals); and Nursing Reference Center (Evidence-based resource to journals, books, & patient education); and 3) Mosby’s Nursing Consult which gives users access to evidence-based nursing, online books, journals, drugs, guidelines, and other resources for nursing information. These databases are accessible from the library and through remote access via the Internet. 

INTERLIBRARY LOAN

The library provides an interlibrary loan service free of charge for its patrons. Articles or books that are not available in the library’s collection can be requested from a lending library.  Interlibrary loan due dates are provided by the lending library and need to be returned on the due date promptly.

COURSE ORIENTATION BINDER

The library maintains a course orientation binder which holds required course information for each class offered by the Cochran School of Nursing.  Items that can be found within this binder are as follows: the required book list for each academic semester, the course overview, the course outline, class assignments, and specific information that the instructor in question deems necessary for the student to access.

PHOTOCOPYING

Two photocopiers and three printers are available in the library.  Photocopies from both the photocopiers and computer printers are 5¢ per page.  Students may obtain free copies if they use discarded paper that the library provides to patrons, or they may use their own paper that should be in excellent condition.  No discarded or personal paper may be used when photocopying from the photocopiers as this may jam the photocopiers. 

MAIN LIBRARY READING ROOM
 
The Main Library Reading Room has a seating capacity of 30. There are 14 computers, and 3 printers for patron usage. This area is reserved for individual or quiet group study.  No food, uncovered beverages, or cell phone usage is permitted.

LIBRARY GROUP STUDY & MEETING ROOM

A group study room is available to patrons who wish to gather together and discuss academic or professional-related topics with their classmates or colleagues.  The Group Study Room can also be reserved for Cochran School of Nursing faculty, CSN administrative staff, and St. John’s Riverside Hospital staff, for lectures or private meetings.  Reservations can be made by contacting the library staff at (914) 964-4281.

LIBRARY POLICY

No eating, drinking, smoking, and use of cell phones are permitted in the Library.
